Music at Lake Burien Presbyterian
With a strong tradition dating back to the 1950's, the LBPC Music Department is recently experiencing an exciting renaissance! There's something for everyone, whether you're an experienced diva or a novice music "appreciator."
The flagship ensemble of the music program is the LBPC Chancel Choir. Ranging from 20-30 singers, this group has sung everything from ancient plainsong to Carol King. The choir rehearses on Wednesday evenings at 7 p.m. in the Sanctuary, and sings at most Sunday morning services. There are also two subgroups made up of singers from the choir - the Vocal Ensemble, a small, select group, and the Women's Chorus. Recent programs have included scenes from "Godspell," "Gospel Christmas," Appalachian carols arranged by John Jacob Niles, selections from Handel's "Messiah" with strings, and much more. This spring we will present a Tenebrae concert of Requiem movements for Good Friday, featuring four outstanding professional soloists, the choir and Jan Klerekoper at the keyboards.
Two important members of our team are praise song leaders Jan Klerekoper (keyboards, singer) and Geoff Klerekoper (guitar, singer). With backup from other praise team singers, they'll have you on your feet singing to the rafters. On the more contemplative side, we offer periodic services in the style of the Taizé community, featuring chant-inspired music, candlelight and moments of meditation designed to center your spirit and open your heart.
Even the little ones get into the act! Whether through a children's musical which utilizes the gifts of several generations, to song and dance with our on-site Spanish-language ministry, to playing Orff instruments and handchimes, there is plenty for the kids to get involved with.
The arts are alive and thriving at Lake Burien Presbyterian! Attend a special Lenten series centered around Passion story themed paintings, or watch a visual artist create a chalk rendering in a service. Be moved by the powerful dramatic reenactment of the Last Supper, be uplifted by a reader's theater presentation, or be inspired by a ballerina's interpretive dance.
